Thanks to some help from WellHome and HomeAid Atlanta, the Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM) is better able to serve homeless families in the Decatur/DeKalb area. A home operated by DCM recently received an in-depth energy audit by WellHome, and once the improvements are made, the home’s energy use is expected to decline by at least 40%. This is terrific news for everyone since the less money that is spent on energy, the more money there is for DCM to use in providing services to needy families and individuals.

As experts in the home energy industry, and members of the Decatur/DeKalb community, the Atlanta WellHome branch eagerly took on the task of assessing the DCM home and compiling a list of updates and installations that are sure to save energy year-round. The recommendations included air sealing and insulating the attic and crawl space, installing a radiant barrier to the roof rafters, duct tightening, upgrading to energy-efficient lighting, and sealing roof penetrations. Also added to the mix will be new, more efficient appliances, which are courtesy of GE Appliances and Lighting.

A local chapter of HomeAid America, HomeAid Atlanta is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing transitional housing for those who find themselves temporarily homeless. They have partnered with DCM on other projects and find that retrofitting this home to be more green is perfectly aligned with their Environmental Sustainability Program, which is funded by a Walmart Foundation grant.

Of course, WellHome is truly honored to be part of this project and provide their experience and knowledge to benefit such a worthy cause and to help people in need.
